Ryder Cup Louisville

The Cup Experience

Louisville is host to the Ryder Cup 2008, which will be held at Valhalla Golf Club just outside the city in September 2008.

The city is preparing to host the event in style with a wide ranging program planned in the lead up to the Ryder Cup matches. The city is no stranger to major events as it plays host to famed The Kentucky Derby and The Iron Man every year. There is no doubt that Louisville intends to surpass itself for golf’s premier event. Louisville Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson has formed a task force comprised of local business executives to create activities surrounding the event that include the entire community. The Governor of Kentucky has formed a similar group on behalf of the Commonwealth.

“The Cup Experience” is expected to draw thousands of fans a revelers to the streets of Louisville with an extravaganza of events for everyone including:

  • The Cup Zone, an interactive experience for both children and adults, for both golfers and casual fans, held at the Kentucky International Convention Center in downtown Louisville;
  • The Cup Village, a signature meeting place at Fourth Street Live! with food, live music and other festivities;
  • The Fightmaster Cup, named for Don Fightmaster and played at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, will be the first-ever international competition pitting North American’s best one-armed golfers against their European counterparts;
  • The Soiree Under the Spires, a ticketed event that will provide a special evening of entertainment, dining and mixing with the stars at Churchill Downs.

    Louisville has some beautiful residential neighborhoods: Old Louisville is right by the abovementioned “Cup Zone” and “Cup Village” and of course, there are several grand housing developments out near Valhalla. Many of the homes are available for rental during the Ryder Cup week–Visit RentMyHouse4Derby.com to select the one that is right for your party!
    Every one of our homes has been inspected by our staff and is guaranteed to meet the highest standards!

    There will be daily shuttles from the Kentucky Expo Center to the golf course. Check out the Ryder Cup website for particulars.

    As far as I know, it is the only way to access the course on tournament days — no public parking.

    Just found Ryder Cup parking at private residence across the street from Valhalla. Owner is charging $50 per day which is not bad when other sites that are close to a mile away are charging $40 per day. Homeowner is Richard Handy and his number is 502-244-5579.
    Hope this helps those that need parking.

    Gearoid,

    The travel time from Lexington to Louisville is around 1.15 hours. There is very little traffic congestion in Louisville and getting round is very easy. That said, Louisville has no metro or light rail lines, so a rental car will be essential.

    If you are staying in Lexington you should look into getting a private horse farm tour and see the Kentucky Horse Park in Georgetown (about 15 min north of Lexington).

    I am a native of Louisville. I think you will find Louisville beautiful, and the people here very friendly. Louisville has many wonderful independent restaurants. I have attached a great link with ratings and reviews. http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/?page_id=9

    If you need a restaurant recommendation, or just would like an answer to a question from a local, feel free to drop me an email ECLOGITE1@aol.com.

    I hope you have a great time.

    The Ryder Cup is great exposure for Louisville. Little know fact is that Louisville has more independently owned restaurants per capital then any other city in the US (excluding NYC). To see where some of the finest eats are you can visit http://www.foodboyz.com, the city’s number one source for dining. Don’t forget to support the Fightmaster Cup Challenge being held at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville (just outside Louisville) the weekend of September 12-14.
