Padraig Harrington Qualifies for the European Ryder Cup Team

Padraig Harrington
And then there were two! Padraig Harrington today secured his place to become the eigth member of the European Ryder Cup team by making the cut at the BMW International Open in Munich leaving only two places still up for grabs. Irish people will breathe a sigh of relief that there will be at least on Irish player on the team as the Ryder Cup is played for the first time in Ireland this year. He may not be the last Irishman to qualify however.

Paul McGinley didn’t make the cut which means it is still possible for him to be caught by Edfors, Bickerton or Broadhurst in the Ryder Cup standings. So far however McGinley is looking good to maintain his place as it would take a top three finish from the others to be caught and that isn’t looking likely at the moment. He could be further helped if Montgomerie maintains his current 24th place which would move Olazábal down as the last qualifer on the European Ryder Cup rankings. (see below for more detailed posts on this). There may even be a third Irishman if the rumour mill is true and Darren Clarke will get one of Ian Woosnam’s captain’s picks.
