Ryder Cup News

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Darren Clarke has announced that he will now be taking a break from golf and is not now considering the Ryder Cup. He’s taking time to prioritise his wife and family. I know that all of our thoughts are with him and his wife Heather as she battles with cancer. Darren is auctioning his European Tour Shot of the Month trophy in aid of breast cancer research the current bid is £5500 – go on! make a bid here on his website.

I’m sure Ian Woosnam will be disapointed not to have the option of playing Darren, who is currently lying just outside the automatic qualification places for Team Europe.

Ryder Cup Home Advantage

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Home advantage is a bit of a misnomer seeing as the Ryder Cup Team on this side of the water is now a rag tag bunch of Europeans rather than a small cosy bunch of golfers from the UK. At the moment there are only 2 Irishmen (Harrington and McGinley) on track for automatic qualifcation. So theoretically Team Europe has a 16.7% home advantage. I suppose the number of “home” supporters rooting for Team Europe at the venue may be biased in their favour, however the cost of getting here from Sweden is probably not much cheaper that getting here from the US and the cost of travel will be overshadowed by the astronomical cost of staying and eating here! Old Dog for the Hard Road

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

The latest standings for Ryder Cup points puts a lot of new faces in the running for top ten positions on Team USA. If Team USA was picked on the basis of the current standings it might affect the TV viewer ratings but would it effect the performance of the team? After all this a meritocracy and these players are on form, which is the point that Lehman has been making. The weakness that Woosnam has identified is that this leaves Lehman with four or five players who have never played in Europe before. I suppose the question is whether this is a liability or just an indication of the massive depth of golfing talent in the US, where players have no need to travel to play very lucrative professional golf? Ryder Cup Ticket Competition – Sunday Tribune & O2

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

I read this morning in The Sunday Tribune (here in Ireland) that the Ryder Cup sponsor O2 and the Sunday Tribune have teamed up to deliver an exciting Ryder Cup ticket competition.

On offer are Corportate Hospitality Tickets which include lunch in the International pavillion – to be in with a chance of winning just answer the following question:

Which Team won the Ryder Cup in 2004?

Email your answer to: winrydercup@tribune.ie

or Post the answer to: Ryder Cup Competition, Sunday Tribune, 15 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin2, Ireland

I assume you should also include some personal information such as your name and address but if you need to clarify the details call the Sunday Tribune on +353 (0)1 6314300

If you don’t know the answer to the question have a look here

(Having said that, if you don’t know the answer maybe the ticket would be more appropriate going to a fan!)
