European Ryder Cup Points – August 21

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

The Ryder Cup is firmly within view now. This week saw the US Ryder Cup team finalised (and the US Captain’s picks announced) and as we enter the last weeks of the European qualifying competitions the team is beginning to become clear. There’s still a lot of competition for those last places. Here’s the latest standings for who’s going to make the European Ryder Cup Team on merit.

Interestingly Olazábal has now dropped out of the World Cup Points list and qualifies under the European Points list which has inadvertently given McGinley a boost in his hopes despite not playing in the US PGA Championship to attend the funeral of Heather Clarke (See this article for how this works).

Darren Clarke Wildcard

Monday, August 21st, 2006

The rumour mill has it that Darren Clarke has been offered one of the European Team wildcard slots by Ian Woosenam.

Darren will not make the top ten automatic selection places this time around as he has been focusing his attention on his wife Heather who recently passed away.

Woosnam could really use Clarke’s Ryder Cup experience (he has been on three winning Ryder cup teams since 1997) but it’s unclear whether Darren will accept the offer. Everyone is certainly rooting for him but I think that all Ryder Cup fans will accept that even though the tournament would be better with Darren on board, he may understandably need more time to grieve his wife and be with his sons.

Ryder Cup News

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Darren Clarke has announced that he will now be taking a break from golf and is not now considering the Ryder Cup. He’s taking time to prioritise his wife and family. I know that all of our thoughts are with him and his wife Heather as she battles with cancer. Darren is auctioning his European Tour Shot of the Month trophy in aid of breast cancer research the current bid is £5500 – go on! make a bid here on his website.

I’m sure Ian Woosnam will be disapointed not to have the option of playing Darren, who is currently lying just outside the automatic qualification places for Team Europe.

Ryder Cup Home Advantage

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Home advantage is a bit of a misnomer seeing as the Ryder Cup Team on this side of the water is now a rag tag bunch of Europeans rather than a small cosy bunch of golfers from the UK. At the moment there are only 2 Irishmen (Harrington and McGinley) on track for automatic qualifcation. So theoretically Team Europe has a 16.7% home advantage. I suppose the number of “home” supporters rooting for Team Europe at the venue may be biased in their favour, however the cost of getting here from Sweden is probably not much cheaper that getting here from the US and the cost of travel will be overshadowed by the astronomical cost of staying and eating here! The Captains Role and Duties

Monday, June 19th, 2006

I was wondering what exactly the Ryders Cup team captains role was so I searched on the internet and didn’t find it clearly outlined anywhere obvious, so I wrote to the PGA both in Europe and the US and asked…

I got the following response from the Press office of the European Tour (I haven’t got a reponse from the US yet so I cannot confirm that both Teams have the same expectations of their Captains)

“The Captain of The European Team is seen as a figurehead. He usually serves for one match although he is in office for up to two years. (more…)
