Padraig Harrington Wins the Claret Jug!

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

A heartfelt congratulations to Padraig Harrington winner of the 2007 British Open at Carnoustie. And what a win it was.

Padraig Harrington

After posting an impeccable round to catch Sergio Garcia, Harrington seemed to fall at the final hurdle through an errant drive on the 18th. Garcia however couldn’t master the 18th either and the dramatic loss of the 1999 Open on the same hole by Jean Van de Velde had to be going through the minds of both players. The four hole playoff couldn’t have started better for Harrington when he managed to leave the first hole with a two stroke lead. Coming up the 18th was nail biting stuff as Harrington chose to (correctly!) lay up and settle for (more…)

Ryder Cup 2007?

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Just a short post for all those who are searching for Ryder Cup 2007 (we are getting a large number of visitors here who have searched for “ryder cup 2007″) – there is no Ryder Cup 2007! The Ryder Cup is held every two years (for a brief overview have a look at Everything You Wanted to Know about the Ryder Cup but Were Afraid to Ask). The Ryder Cup used to be held on odd years until 2001 when it was postponed due to the September 11 tragedy. Since then it appears alternately in Europe and America every two years, on even numbered years. Ryder Cup 2008 is the next event scheduled to be held at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.

Zach Johnson Collects a Green Jacket and Ryder Cup Points

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Zach Johnson (31) was one of the suprise rookies who qualified for the 2006 US Ryder Cup Team and his win at this years Masters at Augusta National was no less suprising. Under the new US Ryder Cup team qualification system the Masters is one of only four events for which Ryder Cup points will be awarded for 2007, one point being awarded for every $1000 earned. Johnson’s last round 69, which secured victory over Tiger Woods in the pairing behind him for only his second ever PGA Tour win, his only previous win came at the 2004 BellSouth Classic. His win however could signify a golfer settling in for a long stretch at the top of a lot of leaderboards to come.

The win catapults Johnson from 56th to 15th in the overall golf World Rankings and the $1.2m prize cheque will help not only his wallet but his Ryder Cup chances also in a year when there is limited opportunities to earn those covetted points.

Ryder Cup Books

Monday, January 15th, 2007

A review of all the best (and worst) books published for the 2006 Ryder Cup.  The publishing industry was well lined up for the Ryder Cup with a slew of books being released throughout 2006 both before and after the event, many of them reprints from earlier years. Prior to September, the books tended to recount different specific Ryder Cups or were more wide ranging histories of the event, often with an Irish angle. The more interesting ones however really got into full swing after the event in September with many different books from players, caddies and journalists being rushed out in time to capture the lucrative Christmas market. Some of these books were sometimes little more than coffee table fluff pieces whilst others were more detailed and well researched. Outlined below are some of the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Cup: How the 2006 Ryder Cup Was Won
Philip Reid

The Cup: How the 2006 Ryder Cup Was Won by Philip Reid

Reid’s book is perhaps the best of the bunch in describing the event that was the Ryder Cup 2006. Those looking for all the facts and figures minutiae will not be disappointed here however it also has something more to add than merely a dry retelling of the event. Reid is a journalist with the Irish Times and as such has a wide background on all matters relating to golf in Ireland. This background adds greatly to the book by situating the event within the context of a very Irish setting in terms of place, time and people.

Celtic Manor Resort plays host to the 38th Ryder Cup Matches in 2010.

The resort, set on 1400 acres in the Usk valley in South Wales, boasts three golf courses – Wentworth Hills, Roman Road and Coldra Woods Academy Course. The Ryder Cup will be played at Wentworth Hills which is being completely overhauled for the event. The new course will be a par 71 – 7459 yds in length. It features nine new holes (1st – 5th and 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th) that have been developed along the floor of the Usk Valley, as well as nine holes from the former Wentwood Hills Championship Course that have been extensively remodelled (6th – 13th and 17th). The course features six signature holes (the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 14th, 15th and 18th), each of which features a formidable water hazard.

Celtic Manor Resort is owned by Sir Terry Matthews, who bought it in 1980 and began an enormous development program to turn the victorian country house and estate into a world class leisure resort. The resort includes a 330 bedroom, 32 suite hotel, a state of the art Convention Centre and Exhibition Hall. New US Ryder Cup Qualifying System Announced

Monday, November 6th, 2006

Lottery

Well the worst kept secret in golf was formally confirmed today as the PGA announced that Paul Azinger is to be the US Ryder Cup Captain for 2008 as reported here last week. The more interesting part of the announcement at the Valhalla Golf Club (home to the 2008 Ryder Cup) was the newly unveiled qualifying system for the US Ryder Cup team.

A change was widely anticpated to try and stem the flow of US losses (the US have lost 6 out of the previous 7 Ryder Cup competitions, the last two by record margins). At an overview level the two main changes are:

  • Qualifying points become tied to the money list weighted towards the year of the competition rather than the two years preceding it as was the case this time around.
  • There will be only 8 automatic qualifying spots (as opposed to 10) and Azinger will get to handpick the remaining 4 places.

Read on if you want the detailed breakdown of how the new US Ryder Cup qualifying system will work. (more…)
